Vaneska Morella found the courage to leave an unhealthy relationship and moved to Vancouver with her daughter Janika (age 4) two years ago. They settled in the Mount Pleasant area, a Vancouver inner-city neighbourhood where nearly 40 per cent of children in this community are vulnerable and need support.

Eager to have a new start in life, Vaneska turned to the Bob and Kay Ackles YMCA Nanook House — a child care centre in the neighbourhood for assistance. She wanted to find her young daughter a safe and nurturing environment with programs to support her early development.

What she’s found is more of a second home than just a child care centre. “My daughter is blossoming here,” said Vaneska. “I’ve also met many other parents who have lived through a lot that I can relate to. They’re now my friends, my community.”

With assistance from the YMCA of Greater Vancouver, thanks to the funds raised by the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign, Vaneska also finished her high school diploma. Through the YMCA Youth Internship Program, Vaneska is now working with the Department of Justice.

“I can already tell how my new experiences have changed me. I have so much more confidence now,” said Vaneska. “I don’t believe my life would be this stable and satisfying without the support of the YMCA.”

With the funds raised by the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign, children like Janika can start life well and parents, like Vaneska, can build a better life and raise a healthy family. Our community can grow stronger by giving those in need a chance to have a new start.
